GEOSERVER KNOW-HOW

GeoServer hosting: Strong partners for your data

A geoserver is essentially the “interpreter” and “logistics expert” for digital maps. It is open-source software used to store and process geographic data (geodata) and make it available on the internet so that anyone can view it in their browser or in an app.

Imagine a city administration wants to publish a map showing all the city’s construction sites. Instead of sending each citizen a huge file to download, requiring special software, the city installs a geoserver. This server then displays the construction sites simply as a layer on an interactive map in a web browser.

1. Translating and Providing Data
Geodata is often available in complex formats (e.g., shapefiles or databases like PostGIS). A GeoServer takes this raw data and converts it into standardized formats that web maps (like Google Maps or OpenStreetMap) understand.

It uses the standards of the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium):

  • WMS (Web Map Service): The server creates a finished image of the map (e.g., a PNG or JPEG) and sends it to the user.
  • WFS (Web Feature Service): The server sends the actual raw data (coordinates and information such as “There is a tree here”) so that the user can edit or analyze it.
  • WCS (Web Coverage Service): Specifically for raster data such as satellite imagery or elevation models.

2. Styling Maps
Raw data initially has no color. The GeoServer uses a language called SLD (Styled Layer Descriptor). The GeoServer applies these rules before delivering the map.

3. Security and Administration

A GeoServer also acts as a gatekeeper. It allows you to precisely define:

  • Who is allowed to view which maps?
  • Is a user only allowed to view data or also to modify it?
  • Which data layers should be grouped together?
